SUMMARY:CLASS: The Army That Turned on the War: GI Resistance in Vietnam

We oppose the criminal waste of American lives and resources. We refuse to go to Vietnam!!!!!!” – Fort Hood Three  \nWhen soldiers in Vietnam began refusing combat orders\, organizing underground anti-war newspapers\, and taking action against their officers\, the U.S. military faced an army in rebellion against the war itself. This class examines the massive GI resistance movement that emerged within the ranks during the Vietnam War\, from individual acts of defiance to organized mutinies\, antiwar coffeehouses near military bases\, and networks of active-duty soldiers who saw themselves not as heroes but as war criminals being ordered to commit atrocities. We’ll explore how this internal revolt\, spanning all branches of service and crossing lines of race and rank\, helped force an end to the war and why the military establishment has worked so hard to erase this history of soldiers who chose conscience over orders. \nINSTRUCTOR: Mike Prysner is an Iraq war veteran turned anti-war organizer\, working with U.S. service members. As a producer & director for Empire Files he has created a body of anti-imperialist films\, podcasts and educational materials (most recently Earth’s Greatest Enemy). DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nThroughout history\, organized workers have been the motor behind every progressive change in society. From the general strike of enslaved workers that dealt the final blow to the system of slavery\, to the sit-down strikes that led to the organization of millions of workers\, history demonstrates the power of the working class: when we are organized\, bold\, and united\, we drive forward the fight for a better future. As the Trump administration is waging an intensified war on workers and all those rights won through decades of struggle\, building a fighting labor movement to overcome these assaults is more urgent than ever. But it requires organizing and empowering millions of workers to transform that potential into real power. \nThis course delves into the history and lessons of the labor movement\, and examines why the power of the organized working class has always been central to every progressive transformation in the United States. Together\, we will explore how we can take these lessons and build a bold\, fighting labor movement today – one that not only defends our rights but goes on the offensive to win a world organized to meet the needs of the many\, not just the few.  \nThis course is organized by On the Line\, a media and education project that analyzes\, reports on\, and draws lessons from the struggles of workers across the country to build a fighting labor movement. \nREGISTER HERE \nWHEN \nThis is a 3 week course from November 4 – 20\, with sessions held twice a week\, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:30 PM ET. Houston\, Texas) is a New York-based\, self-taught artist\, poet\, and educator with a practice spanning printmaking\, installation\, and mixed media with a central focus on the cyanotype process. Fuller’s work emerges from historical analysis and introspection\, exploring what lies beyond the constraints of family\, the church\, trauma\, and the cultural realities of the South. These introspections are interwoven with the concept of “rememory\,” a term borrowed from Toni Morrison\, which reflects how memory exists beyond\, or even escapes\, the individual mind by inhabiting objects\, places\, and communities.\n \n

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW \n*In-person and livestreamed at The People’s Forum in NYC* \nTuesdays\, September 30-October 28\, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM\nA course on modern Middle Eastern history was originally scheduled to be taught at Columbia University in Fall 2025. However\, as Columbia continues its complicity in covering up the U.S.-Israeli genocide against Palestine and capitulates to the Trump administration at the expense of academic freedom and student rights\, Professor Rashid Khalidi found it impossible to teach his course. This segment of the course\, entitled A Short Course on Palestine\, will now be offered at The People’s Forum\, co-sponsored with the Institute for Palestine Studies\, making it accessible to the broader public.  \nWHAT: \nThis course examines the history of Palestine since 1917 in summary form. It starts from the premise that this is not a “conflict” between two equally matched parties\, or that it started with the wars of 1948 or 1967. Rather\, these episodes are part of a systematic\, if intermittent\, war that has lasted for over a century\, aimed at dispossessing the Palestinian people and transforming their homeland into an exclusive Jewish national home. This war had its origins in several phenomena: the irruption of imperialism into the Middle East; the rise of nation-state nationalisms\, both Arab and Jewish; the settler-colonial methods employed by the Zionist movement to “transform Palestine into the land of Israel” in the words of an early Zionist leader; and stubborn Palestinian resistance to these settler colonial aims and methods. \nEmerging in response to virulent European anti-Semitism\, the Zionist movement was\, and initially saw itself as\, both a nationalist and a settler-colonial project. After searching for other sponsors\, in 1917 this movement garnered the support of the British Empire\, which considered it to be a tool to achieve its strategic aims in the Middle East\, and as a “little loyal Jewish Ulster in a sea of potentially hostile Arabism\,” in the words of one British colonial official. Zionism thereby obtained the wherewithal for launching an externally supported war on Palestine and its people. Since then\, the offspring of this movement\, the state of Israel\, has enjoyed the uninterrupted backing of major global powers\, most importantly the United States. These powers saw Israel as serving their regional objectives\, and have played crucial roles in supporting all of Israel’s wars since 1948. \nWHEN: \nThe course meets on Tuesdays from September 30 to October 28\, from  6:30 – 8:30 PM ET\, and will be held in-person at The People’s Forum in NYC (320 W 37th St.) and will be livestreamed via YouTube for those who cannot attend in-person. \n  \nDONATE TO UNIVERSITIES IN GAZA: \nAll revenue from book sales related to this course\, and all contributions by in-person and online participants\, will go through a registered 501(C)3 to ISNAD\, which supports the three main universities in the Gaza Strip. \n  \nREGISTER NOW \n

Abroad\, this same administration is fueling genocide\, war\, and militarism – pushing humanity closer to the brink of global conflict. But Trump’s agenda is only one symptom of a system that has always prioritized profit over human wellbeing\, and that is controlled by a very small ruling class willing to sacrifice humanity for the sake of their own greed and wealth.  \nA better system of organizing society is not only possible\, it is necessary. And if we are organized\, we can build a society that serves and prioritizes the needs of the majority\, the everyday working people who make the world run. In nearby regions\, it is more widely spoken in areas of Newark\, New Jersey; Astoria\, Queens; in the coastal regions of Connecticut\, and Massachusetts. \nAbout the instructor:\nNatalia de Campos\, born in São Paulo\, Brazil\, is a performance artist\, producer\, writer\, educator\, language interpreter\, translator\, and activist. Natalia has taught English and Portuguese to non-native speakers for decades in multiple settings. Living in New York since 1998\, she founded\nthe multidisciplinary arts collaborative Syncretic Pleasures to continue to teach\, while also translating\, producing and performing works by Brazilian\nauthors\, including her own. In 2016 she co-founded the Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee in New York (DDB-NY) with a group of activists who\nfight for democracy\, social justice\, and defend social movements in Brazil. DDB is a member of The People’s Forum. Natalia’s most recent teaching/\nlecturing includes courses for independent non-profit organizations and institutions like CUNY Graduate Center\, Brooklyn College and City College\,\nNYU Tisch and Hemispheric Institute\, Rutgers University\, Columbia University\, in Portuguese language\, Brazilian Art & Social History\, social\nengagement\, collaboration\, solo performance & activism. SUMMARY:[COURSE] Introduction to Racial Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:Racism has been one of the most enduring tools in the service of capitalism\, which manufactures the division of the working class—organizing human life into hierarchies that produce and justify exploitation\, expropriation\, and violence. This course will examine the entangled histories of racial division and global capitalism through the lens of racial capitalism\, a conceptual framework developed to analyze how capitalism’s emergence and evolution has relied on racial exploitation. From slavery and colonial conquest to contemporary regimes of policing\, war\, and labor\, we will examine how racial difference is produced and weaponized to generate profit and enforce domination. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in New York City (Lenapehoking)\, one of the largest and most diverse Spanish-speaking cities in the world and the rest of Turtle Island and Abya Yala. \n\nThis summer brings new beginnings: we’re welcoming a brand-new Español III\, a space designed especially for practicing\, strengthening\, and rooting what you’ve already started to grow. DESCRIPTION:We are living in a moment of deepening crisis\, marked by seemingly endless wars\, accelerating climate catastrophe\, and rising inequality. As the United States continues to drive humanity and the planet toward greater destruction\, the need for revolutionary analysis is more urgent than ever.  \nOver a century ago\, in the midst of World War I\, Lenin exposed how war\, financial domination\, and global exploitation are not exceptions but core features of the imperialist system. That system\, though it has developed and changed\, still defines the world we live in today. \nThis four-part series will take up Lenin’s analysis as a foundation for understanding imperialism\, not simply as a set of foreign policies\, but as a system of domination and exploitation imposed on the nations of the world. Our goal is not just to understand the system but to equip ourselves with the theory and clarity needed to build an anti-imperialist movement capable of confronting and transforming it. \nDATES: Tu./Thurs. Through a close study of V.I. Lenin’s Imperialism\, the Highest Stage of Capitalism\, we will connect Lenin’s historical analysis to the contemporary political and economic realities and manifestations of U.S. imperialism in order to strengthen our anti-imperialist organizing today. Each session will combine a lecture from Manu Karuka with small group discussions to deepen understanding and collective analysis \nWHO  \nThis is a course for all  who are seeking a deeper study of imperialism and political economy in order to better inform their organizing work.  Each of the four sessions will build on the last\, and we ask that participants commit to the full course or use the materials provided to stay caught up if they miss a session. \nWHEN \nThis is a 4 session course running from June 3 to June 12\, with classes held on Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week\, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM ET. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills\, and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs.  \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. DESCRIPTION:“UNDERSTANDING ZIONISM” \nClass 6 – Zionism and the Movement for Palestine in the US \nThis session will explore the role Zionism plays within the US as not simply support for Israel but as an extension of the logic of imperialism domestically. On a political and institutional level\, Zionism is a hegemonic ideological force. The network of pro-Israel organizations and lobby groups wield considerable influence and shape corporate media\, political actors\, and US institutional life in order to suppress the movement for Palestinian liberation. However\, at its core\, Zionism remains hegemonic because it also constitutes a core feature of US imperialist politics on a global scale. This session will discuss that while support for Zionism appears antithetical to liberal values typically espoused by US institutions who support Israel\, in reality Zionism lays bare the true commitment of these institutions to advancing imperialism\, corporate interests\, and the political and economic disenfranchisement of the US working class. This will lead us to understand what we are fighting for\, especially in the West\, and what we are up against as we continue to grow the movement for Palestine.

DESCRIPTION:“UNDERSTANDING ZIONISM” \nClass 5 – Israel’s Divided Society: Contemporary Zionism and its Contradictions \nThis session will investigate Zionist society through close examination of internal dynamics of Israel’s various religious\, geographic\, and ethnic settler communities and how such dynamics are exposed by Arab/Palestinian resistance projects. Through investigating the dialectical relationship between Zionism’s settler-colonial nature and the counter-forces of Arab resistance\, we will uncover the corollary that Zionist ideology inherently leads to genocide\, whether postulated as “leftwing” (Labor Zionism) or rightwing (Revisionist Zionism/Religious Zionism). Participants will come away with an understanding of how Israeli society’s divisions are a byproduct of its settler-colonial nature and its inability to solve the Palestine question (i.e. completely eliminate the Palestinian people and remove them from their land). Finally\, this session also investigates contradictions between Zionism and different factions of the US ruling class.

Since replacing Britain as the head of world imperialism at the end of World War Two\, the United States has increasingly deepened its relationship with Israel and the world Zionist movement on the basis of counterrevolution\, resulting in system-wide overlaps in the realms of profit accumulation\, ideology\, repression\, and militarism. We will study how Israel’s role as the cornerstone of the United States’ control of the West Asia region perpetually threatens Palestine’s “strategic depth” of Arab popular support with war-imposed ruin and dependency.
