SUMMARY:PUBLIC READING: THE REVOLUTION'S PROMISE
DESCRIPTION:On December 13\, 2023\, the Freedom Theater\, a theater that has been a cultural center and using cultural resistance to fight for Palestinian justice through performing arts in Jenin Refugee Camp in occupied Palestine was attacked by the Israeli army. Not only they have destroyed the theater\, a place that has been a cultural center for the Palestinian people\, but they have also forcefully detained Ahmed Tobasi\, the Artistic Director\, and Mustafa Sheta\, the Producer of the Theater\, from their homes. \nThe Resolution’s Promise\, a collection of testimonies from artists across Palestine\, celebrating cultural resistance and highlighting censorship and attacks on artists\, in collaboration with the Freedom Theater and Artists on The Frontline on December 10th\, which was International Humans’ Rights Day. \nAnd only 3 days later\, this theater was violently destroyed. \nArt has the power of storytelling. It is the voice of the people. A Theater is a place where creativity\, something that is innately human\, a place where people gather to connect to share to feel\, where people cherish humanity\, was destoroyed by inhumane brutality. Us artists\, cultural workers\, practitioners of mediums that connects people touching hearts\, a platform capable of sending out a message\, telling stories\, must use this privilege of ours in our utmost capacity in solidarity with the Palestine artists and the Freedom Theater. \nWe you to be a part of this public reading group. We will be reading monologues from the Revolution’s Promise followed by a group conversation discussing questions starting with; “Why is art and culture such a powerful tool in standing up to oppression?”
