SUMMARY:First Fridays ft. Mariachi Reyes & Linda Paúla Marcos
DESCRIPTION:Join us Fri. Nov. 6th at 7pm for an evening with family mariachi band Mariachi Reyes and singer-songwriter Linda Paúla Marcos\, including a preview of her upcoming album Humané. \nFirst Fridays at The People’s Forum is a monthly concert series curated and co-presented by Artists Against Apartheid\, featuring artists on the cutting edge of culture whose work speaks to the political and social moment. Each show is a live\, intimate\, and immersive experience—a space where music & art are understood as tools in the struggle for collective liberation.\nThis month\, we’re bringing two acts to the TPF stage for a one-night-only celebration of Latin American music. \nMariachi Reyes is a family who have played mariachi together their whole lives. They carry the tradition forward as a family through performance and their presence on social media. \nLinda Paúla Marcos’ voice and words have a deep and viscerally tender resonance that arrests the listener into reflection\, while evolving the tapestry of contemporary Latin American music rooted right here in Lenapehoking (New York City). Marcos’ music seamlessly harkens to towering legacies of legendary nueva canción and folk icons like Mercedes Sosa\, Chabuca Granda\, Soledad Bravo\, and Atahualpa Yupanqui\, preserving a vital\, deeply emotional lineage of acoustic storytelling. Melding her Afro-Andean roots with a modern\, New York-born perspective gives her music a rare and timeless weight that speaks directly to the current human experience. Marcos will be sharing original work from her upcoming album Humané and traditional work alongside guitarist\, Alba Rios. \nAlba Rios is a multi-genre guitarist based in Brooklyn. Born in Lima and a proud immigrant\, she projects her obsession with Peruvian music and the lament it lavishes with her traditional criollo style. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY: THE ART OF LANGUAGE w/ AIYAH SIBAY
DESCRIPTION:ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY: THE ART OF LANGUAGE w/ AIYAH SIBAY \nOne-day  |  Wednesday\, October 28\, 6:00-8:30PM  |  Sliding Scale \nThis one-day workshop invites participants to experience the ancient art of the Arabic language and its sacred rituals. The calligraphic session will begin with somatic breathwork and meditation. You will then be led through exercises that will teach you the technical foundations of Arabic calligraphy using reed and ink. \nThis workshop offers a feminine approach to a predominantly masculine medium\, so there will be room to experiment and to study the works of female artists who have experimented with the Arabic language in their visual practice. We will end with a reading of poetry from the region and instructions for how to develop one’s own long-term practice beyond the session! \n__ \nAiyah Sibay is a Syrian-American writer and visual artist.\nHer work honors the stories of Arab women and their position in the world. Using poetry\, textile\, and audiovisuals\, she delivers narratives that have been historically shamed and silenced\, working equally with the political and the sensual in recognition of their inseparability.\nShe has served as a writer for Tribe magazine and Al Rawiya. Her visual work has been exhibited internationally\, and she is the independent founder of Tribeless\, a project devoted to SWANA literature and poetry through hand-painted designs\, and to the preservation of the region’s spiritual and erotic literary canon and history.

SUMMARY:Songs in the Key of Life at 50 Symposium
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 50th anniversary of Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life\, the Center for the Study of Social Difference (CSSD) at Columbia University is organizing a full-day symposium and accompanying concert. \nHeld in partnership with The People’s Forum\, the symposium and accompanying concert will reflect on the groundbreaking album’s insights into life in the wake of civil rights and decolonial movements across the African world\, and on the legacies of Wonder’s hopeful vision of a future grounded in love and shared humanity. They will kick off a yearlong series of public events and study sessions organized by CSSD that respond to the U.S. semiquincentennial and offer a critical counternarrative to officially sanctioned accounts of the past by focusing on works with alternative anniversaries which illuminate the experiences of minoritized communities.\n\nThe symposium features four panels\, each focusing on one side of Wonder’s four-sided album. Panels will bring together scholars and musicians for conversations that incorporate close listening and improvisational demonstrations. Themes broached in discussions will range from urban Black and brown impoverishment and jazz as a form of Black resistance to Black familial love and Global South solidarities. Panelists include Marcus J. Moore\, LaFrae Sci\, Samora Pinderhughes\, Naomi Extra\, Naima Cochrane\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Toshi Reagon\, and Shana L. Redmond. The symposium will end with a jam session building off of the album’s bonus tracks\, led by Dr. Guthrie Ramsey’s Musiqology\, and a reception.  \nTaking place at The People’s Forum\, the symposium\, which is co-sponsored by the Center for Jazz Studies\, is free and open for all to attend. Registration is required. Register here. \n\nFollowing the symposium\, CSSD is proud to co-present\, along with Pique-nique\, Boom Collective and The Radio in the Orchard (TRiO)\, a concert featuring musician Elliott Skinner at The Pocket Jazz Club. Organized as part of Pique-nique’s “Take Two” series\, the concert will include a listening session of Wonder’s album followed by a reinterpretation by Skinner. Blending soul\, blues\, folk\, and rock\, singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Skinner creates music that combines atmospheric vocals and rich instrumentation with an emphasis on personal storytelling. His work draws from the Black Radical Music Tradition\, a lineage of Black artists who have used music to explore identity\, confront social realities\, and imagine new possibilities for freedom. SUMMARY:Shades of Discourse 006: A Seat at Whose Table?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Shades of Discourse\, an event series that brings together young Black organizers\, creatives\, and scholars to build radical futures. The event will feature a social hour\, panel discussion\, and live art session centered on the theme: A Seat at Whose Table: Representation\, Elite Capture\, and the Search for Black Liberation. \nWhat’s happening to Black representation right now? Why are so many of our “representatives” in culture and politics drifting from the communities that raised them? What alternative models of power might also serve us? \nPull up\, let’s figure it out together. \nRSVP \nThrough art\, discussion\, and community exchange\, we’ll explore what true representation looks like\, and when it becomes a release valve instead of a tool for change. \nSeptember 19th\, 4-9 pm\, The People’s Forum\nArtwork by Maurice James Jr. / Poster by Sebastian D’Agosta
