I am going to go fulfill my proper function in the social organism. I’m going to go unbuild walls.” \n—Ursula K. Le Guin\, The Dispossessed \nDrawing from over twenty years of activism on local and national levels\, Silky Shah’s Unbuild Walls offers an organizer’s perspective on the intersections of immigrant rights\, racial justice\, and prison abolition. In the wake of post-9/11 xenophobia\, Obama’s record-level deportations\, Trump’s immigration policies\, and the 2020 uprisings for racial justice\, the US remains entrenched in a circular discourse regarding migrant justice. As organizer Silky Shah argues in Unbuild Walls\, we must move beyond building nicer cages or advocating for comprehensive immigration reform. Our only hope for creating a liberated society for all\, she insists\, is abolition. Unbuild Walls dives into US immigration policy and its relationship to mass incarceration\, from the last forty years up to the present\, showing how the prison-industrial complex and immigration enforcement are intertwined systems of repression. Incorporating historical and legal analyses\, Shah’s personal experience as an organizer\, as well as stories of people\, campaigns\, organizations\, and localities that have resisted detention and deportation\, Shah assesses the movement’s strategies\, challenges\, successes\, and shortcomings. Professor Das is the co-director of the NYU Immigrant Rights Clinic\, a leading institution in national and local struggles for immigrant rights. She defends the rights of immigrants facing deportation and partners with community groups on immigrant rights campaigns. Her legal scholarship has been published by leading law journals and cited by the U.S. Supreme Court. She is the author of No Justice in the Shadows: How America Criminalizes Immigrants (Bold Type Books\, April 2020). She is a recipient of numerous awards including the Immigrant Defense Project Champion of Justice Award\, the Daniel Levy Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Immigration Law\, and the NYU Law School Podell Distinguished Teaching Award. She is a frequent commentator on immigration law and policy for national and local media outlets. Professor Das lives with her family in Brooklyn\, New York. \nSophia Elena Gurulé is a member of the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys (ALAA)-UAW Local 2325 as well as an organizer with Critical Resistance and UAW Labor for Palestine. She is also a Senior Staff Attorney and Senior Policy Counsel to the Immigration Practice at The Bronx Defenders\, where she defends people in ICE detention facing deportation as well as advocates for policies to protect criminalized\, working class immigrant communities from ICE enforcement. \nTania Mattos\, a proud Aymara descendant born in Bolivia and raised in Queens\, NY\, is a seasoned organizer\, activist\, and policy advocate with over 13 years of dedicated service. As a founding member of the Abolish ICE NY NJ Coalition\, established in 2018 to galvanize efforts to end ICE detention in both states. Moreover\, she also recently won a three-decades-long fight to stay in the United States with the support of UnLocal\, an immigration legal organization she now leads as the Interim Executive Director. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hybrid book talk on Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto\, with author Kōhei Saitō and local organizers and scholars. In it\, Saitō asks: Why\, in our affluent society\, do so many people live in poverty\, without access to health care\, working multiple jobs and are nevertheless unable to make ends meet\, with no future prospects\, while the planet is burning? \nIn this international bestseller\, Saitō argues that while unfettered capitalism is often blamed for inequality and climate change\, subsequent calls for “sustainable growth” and a “Green New Deal” are a dangerous compromise. Capitalism creates artificial scarcity by pursuing profit based on the value of products rather than their usefulness and by putting perpetual growth above all else. It is therefore impossible to reverse climate change in a capitalist society—more: the system that caused the problem in the first place cannot be an integral part of the solution. \nInstead\, Saitō advocates for degrowth and deceleration\, which he conceives as the slowing of economic activity through the democratic reform of labor and production. How can we draw on our histories to build a better future for all?  \n  \nA Land With A People: Palestinians and Jews Confront Zionism  \nEdited by Esther Farmer\, Rosalind Pollack Petchesky and Sarah Sills \n  \nEsther Farmer Is a Palestinian Jew who has been active in Palestinian solidarity for 50 years. She is the co -editor of the book\, A Land With A People: Palestinians and Jews Confront Zionism\, (2021)\, and the director and script writer of the theater project\, Wrestling with Zionism.  She has also spearheaded the National Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) project\, How to Have Hard Conversations about Israel/Palestine. She is on the leadership team of New York City JVP. \n  \nRosalind Petchesky is Distinguished Professor Emerita (retired) of Political Science at Hunter College and the Graduate Center\, City University of New York. She is a widely published feminist scholar and recipient of a MacArthur (“genius”) Fellowship. Her first book\, Abortion and Women’s Choice: The state\, sexuality and reproductive freedom (1984\,1990) was cited by the United States Supreme Court in its landmark decision\, Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992)\, and received an award from the American Historical Association. It will be issued by Verso in a new edition in March 2024 as part of their Feminist Classics series. Her many subsequent articles and books in the field of reproductive and sexual rights and justice have been translated and circulated in countries across the globe. Since 2013\, Professor Petchesky has been an active member of Jewish Voice for Peace and part of the New York City chapter’s leadership team\, with whom she co-edited/authored A Land With A People: Palestinians and Jews \nconfront Zionism (Monthly Review\, 2021). She lives in New York City with her two cats and is the proud grandmother of Anna and Jack Macias Petchesky. \n  \nSarah Sills (co-editor) is a lifelong artist-activist\, graphic designer\, organizer\, and event producer. Over the years she co-led a Teamsters trade union delegation to China\, organized clerical workers at Columbia University\, raised money for women’s cooperatives in El Salvador during the civil war in the early 1990s\, and worked at a pro-Aristide Haitian newspaper. SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: It's Not Where You Live\, It's How You Live with John Bissett
DESCRIPTION:Its Not Where You Live Its How You Live is a story about the everyday struggles of working class people in a public housing estate in Dublin\, Ireland. Struggles over work\, money\, food\, love and care. These are the ‘How you Live’ issues. They are all here wrapped in a tight weave which is dense and often oppressive. We need to understand what we want to change. The book provides that understanding of what needs to change and also why things need to change. It provides the material for class\, gender and race struggles within public housing and across cities. The book tells a particular story that is at the same time universal in that it is as common to New York or Chicago as it is to Dublin. Books might help change the world but it is people who will abolish capitalism and provide the imagination for a new world where war and profit and exploitation are not its dominant themes. Building strong connections between our understanding and our activism is crucial. The book is a contribution to that process. it is an absolute pleasure to be able to come to the People’s Forum to discuss the book and perhaps more importantly to share our common struggles across the world. \nWatch the livestream HERE.

DESCRIPTION:It is today all but taken for granted by critical political economists – and by political figures from Hillary Clinton to Bernie Sanders – that finance is parasitic on industry. Financialization\, in this view\, amounts to financial institutions capturing the state\, hollowing out the “real” economy\, and thereby hastening the decline of capitalism. But Stephen Maher and Scott Aquanno pose a bold challenge to this hypothesis in their new book\, The Fall and Rise of American Finance: From J.P. Morgan to Blackrock. Surveying the last century of capitalist development\, they insist that\, despite the costs to workers and the middle class\, financialization has boosted competitiveness and strengthened capital – all with the support of an ever stronger and more authoritarian state. This has culminated since the 2008 crisis in a new economic regime – “a new finance capital” – marked by unprecedented concentration and centralization in the hands of the “Big Three” asset management firms (BlackRock\, Vanguard\, Fidelity). \nStephen Maher is Assistant Professor of Economics at SUNY Cortland\, and Associate Editor of the Socialist Register. He is also the author of Corporate Capitalism and the Integral State: General Electric and a Century of American Power (Palgrave\, 2022). \nScott Aquanno is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Ontario Tech University\, and a Visiting Associate at the Global Labour Research Centre at York University. The Trinity of Fundamentals is the fictionalized account of former Palestinian prisoner Rafeedie’s nine-year experience hiding from the Occupation\, now presented in its first-ever English translation. \nWritten in 1993 during Rafeedie’s time in Israeli prison and confiscated by prison guards\, The Trinity of Fundamentals was smuggled out by Wisam’s comrades\, and soon after became a significant text for the Palestinian prisoner’s movement. From historical events like the First Intifada and the Gulf War to the deeply intimate moments of life in hiding\, this story gives us a glimpse into what life looks like when it is wholly dedicated to the cause of liberation and is transformed by revolution. As we continue on the path in defense of Gaza against the Zionist genocide\, we must work to deepen our collective understanding of the Palestinian struggle and its many manifestations across our noble history. \nLove\, revolution\, and life—these are the “trinity of fundamentals” that pave Kan’an’s path of struggle. Although the novel is set in the past\, it holds many lessons that resonate with our current political moment\, mobilizing us into collective action. \nThe event will be a discussion of the book with editors from PYM and 1804 Books\, followed by a Q&A with audience members. These communities—among the most vulnerable to but also least responsible for the climate crisis—have long been at the forefront of the fight to protect imperiled worlds. Today\, as the world’s forests burn and our oceans acidify\, grassroots movements are tenaciously defending the environmental commons and forging just and sustainable ways of living on Earth. The fight against ecocide is already being waged worldwide. Building on longstanding traditions of anticolonial struggle\, environmentalism from below is a model for a people’s movement for climate justice—one that demands solidarity.\n\n\nAshley Dawson is Professor of English at the Graduate Center / City University of New York and the College of Staten Island. He is the author of several books on key topics in the environmental humanities\, including People’s Power: Reclaiming the Energy Commons\, Extreme Cities: The Peril and Promise of Urban Life in the Age of Climate Change\, and Extinction: A Radical History. A member of the Public Power NY campaign and the founder of the CUNY Climate Action Lab\, he is a long-time climate justice activist.\nOlúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk on Class\, Race\, and Gender: Challenging the Injuries and Divisions of Capitalism with author Michael Zweig and organizers Jamel Coy Hudson\, Juliet Ucelli\, and Darinel Velasquez. Bringing forth the basic operations of capitalist economies\, it reveals what is driving many of today’s most urgent and vexing problems: the common origins of the inequalities of income\, wealth\, and power; environmental devastation; militarism; racism and white supremacy; patriarchy and male chauvinism; periodic economic crises; and the cultural conflicts that are tearing at US life. \nMichael Zweig illuminates all propositions with specific examples from US history\, from the first settlement of the New World to current life\, including his own lived experiences as an activist\, educator\, and organizer over the past six decades. As such\, the book is an urgently needed resource for activists and organizers seeking structural and moral transformation of life in the US. Building on his analysis\, Zweig also presents strategies for political action in electoral and movement-building work. \nJamel Coy Hudson is a lecturer\, professor\, and rhetorician. He has dedicated his academic pursuits to rhetorical studies\, culminating in degrees at the undergraduate\, graduate\, and doctoral levels. He is a Lecturer of Rhetoric and Public Advocacy in the Department of Communication Studies at CUNY Baruch College. In addition to his appointment at CUNY Baruch College\, he has also taught as a faculty member in the Department of Writing Studies and Rhetoric at his alma mater\, Hofstra University. Currently\, he serves as the Tri-chair of the New York State Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and is committed to realizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of the Beloved Community. \nJuliet Ucelli (she/her) is a founder of the Brecht Forum/NY Marxist School and Italian Americans for a Multicultural US (IAMUS)\, and a long-time organizer in public school\, anti-racist and anti-war movements. She has served in the national leadership of Liberation Road and writes and teaches on Marx’s Capital\, human development and psychology. \nDarinel Velasquez (he/him) is a Community Organizer with New York Communities for Change. He has organized multiple campaigns on climate justice\, public safety\, and education\, with a focus on housing/tenant rights. His most recent success was mobilizing tenants to win a 0% rent increase in the Village of Hempstead. Having completed the Studio Recording Technology program at Nassau Community College he emphasizes incorporating art and music into the movement space. \nMichael Zweig is the founding director of the Center for Study of Working Class Life and emeritus professor of economics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook\, where he received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is a member of the New York State Coordinating Committee of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and an elected member of the executive board of United University Professions (AFT 2190) at SUNY Stony Brook. Prior to Class\, Race\, and Gender: Challenging the Injuries and Divisions of Capitalism\, his books include The Working Class Majority: America’s Best Kept Secret and Religion and Economic Justice. He lives with his wife in New York City and on the North Fork of Long Island\, where for over thirty years he has served as a volunteer in the Southold Fire Department.

Her academic work investigates the history of ideas about race\, queerness\, safety\, and rights\, and their production as political levers in the realm of hate crimes policy\, surveillance\, anti-terror measures\, and war. She is at work on a critical history of the Anti-Defamation League (1913-1990) as a Cold War neoconservative institution\, as well as an edited volume of social justice movement writings and academic research on resistance to the ADL. She is the co-chair of the American Studies Association Caucus on Academic and Community Activism\, and a longtime community activist in New York City. \n\nAbout Friends of Israel:Friends of Israel provides a forensically researched account of the activities of Israel’s advocates in Britain and the United States\, showing how they contribute to maintaining Israeli apartheid. The book traces the history and changing fortunes of key actors within the British Zionist movement in the context of the Israeli government’s contemporary efforts to repress a rising tide of solidarity with Palestinians expressed through the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Offering a nuanced and politically relevant account of pro-Israel actors’ strategies\, tactics\, and varying levels of success in key arenas of society\, it draws parallels with the similar anti-boycott campaign waged by supporters of the erstwhile apartheid regime in South Africa. \nBy demystifying the actors involved in the Zionist movement\, the book provides an anti-racist analysis of the pro-Israel lobby which robustly rebuffs anti-Semitic conspiracies. Sensitively and accessibly written\, it emphasizes the complicity of British actors – both those in government and in civil society. Drawing on a range of sources including interviews with leading pro-Israel activists and Palestinian rights activists\, documents obtained through Freedom of Information requests and archival material\, Friends of Israel is a much-needed contribution to Israel/Palestine-related scholarship and a useful resource for the Palestine solidarity movement.

In 2014 she joined TeleSUR\, where in six years she rose through the ranks to become editor-in-chief\, overseeing news\, analysis and multimedia content. Currently based in Caracas\, she joined Venezuelanalysis in March 2021 as a writer and social media manager and is a member of Venezuelan artist collective Utopix. Her main interests are popular and feminist struggles.\n\nCira Pascual Marquina\nCira Pascual Marquina is a Political Science professor at the Universidad Bolivariana de Venezuela in Caracas and a teacher and organizer at the Pluriversidad Patria Grande\, El Panal Commune’s educational initiative. She is also co‐producer and co‐host (with Chris Gilbert) of the Marxist education program Escuela de Cuadros. Pascual Marquina\, a member of the International Communal Democracy Network\, is co-author of Venezuela\, the Present as Struggle: Voices from the Bolivarian Revolution (Monthly Review Press) and co‐compiler of two books: Para qué sirve El Capital: un balance contemporáneo de la obra principal de Karl Marx and ¿Por qué socialismo? Reactivando un debate (both Editorial Trinchera).\n\n\nJosé Luis Granados Ceja\nJosé Luis Granados Ceja was born in Mexico City and spent his life migrating throughout the Americas\, having lived in the United States\, Brazil\, Canada\, and Ecuador. It was his experience as a migrant that led to his development of class consciousness at a young age. In 2005 he would travel to Venezuela to participate in the World Festival of Youth and Students\, an experience that would change him forever and instill in him a passion for resisting imperialism and defending popular power. In 2018\, he realized his dream of returning to Mexico as writer and photojournalist to produce stories about the people of Latin America. He is a Staff Writer with Venezuelanalysis\, covering regional and international issues\, and writes a monthly opinion column for the Mexico Solidarity Project. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in the Defense and Promotion of Human Rights at the Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México.

Joined by historian Adam Tooze (Shutdown: How Covid Shook the World’s Economy)\, their discussion will illuminate the economic systems and strategies—from austerity\, to tax havens\, and beyond—that serve as the instruments that uphold and protect the capitalist system. \nWatch the livestream HERE \nClara E. Mattei is an Associate Professor in the Economics Department of The New School for Social Research\, and was a 2018-2019 member of the School of Social Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Studies. Her research contributes to the history of capitalism\, exploring the critical relation between economic ideas and technocratic policy making. She recently published her first book titled The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the Way to Fascism (University of Chicago Press\, November 2022)\, which was selected by the Financial Times as one of the best books of 2022 and is being translated in more than 10 languages.  It investigates the origins of austerity after the WWI crisis to understand its logic as a tool of reaction against any alternatives to capitalism.  She is currently working on a book project which critically reassesses the Golden Age of Capitalism (1945-1975) and its Keynesianism through the lens of austerity capitalism. Her writings have appeared on The Guardian\, Jacobin\, The Nation and Il Fatto Quotidiano—an Italian national newspaper she contributes to regularly. \n\nQuinn Slobodian is the author of Crack-Up Capitalism: Market Radicals and the Dream of a World without Democracy published by Metropolitan Books in the US\, Penguin in the UK\, Suhrkamp in Germany\, Seuil in France\, and elsewhere. His previous book\, Globalists: The End of Empire and the Birth of Neoliberalism (Harvard University Press\, 2018)\, won the American Historical Association’s George Louis Beer Prize and has been translated into seven languages. He is professor of history at Wellesley College\, contributing writer to New Statesman\, co-edits Contemporary European History and co-directs the History and Political Economy Project.\n\nAdam Tooze holds the Shelby Cullom Davis chair of History at Columbia University and serves as Director of the European Institute. In 2019\, Foreign Policy Magazine named him one of the top Global Thinkers of the decade. For his books\, Adam has won the Leverhulme prize fellowship\, the H-Soz-Kult Historisches Buch Prize\, the Longman History Today Prize\, the Wolfson Prize and the LA Times History Prize. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk on Migration as Economic Imperialism by Immanuel Ness in conversation with Corinna Mullin. For several decades\, wealthy states\, international development agencies\, and multinational corporations have encouraged labour migration from the Global South to the Global North. The remittances that migrants send home have been touted as the most promising means of national development for poor and undeveloped countries. \nBut as Ness argues in this sharp corrective\, temporary labour migration represents the most recent form of economic imperialism and global domination. Remittances deepen economic exploitation\, unravel societal stability\, and significantly expand economic inequality between poor and rich societies. Migration as Economic Imperialism exposes the damaging effects of migration on origin countries in Africa\, Asia and Latin America; and how border and security mechanisms control and marginalize low-wage migrant workers\, especially women and youth. \nWATCH THE LIVESTREAM HERE \nIMMANUEL NESS is Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and on contract as Visiting Professor of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg. His other works include: The Oxford Handbook of Migration Crises (2019); The Oxford Handbook of Economic Imperialism (2022); Global Perspectives on Workers and Labour Organizations (2019)\, and the Palgrave Encyclopedia of Imperialism and Anti-Imperialism (2014/2021). He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Labor and Society. \nCORINNA MULLIN is professor of political science and international political economy at John Jay College and Brooklyn College (CUNY). She completed her PhD in 2008 at the London School of Economics (LSE)\, followed by a postdoc and lectureship at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). She then spent five years living in Tunisia\, where she taught at the University of Tunis. She returned to New York in 2017. Corinna’s research examines the historical legacies of colonialism\, the role of capitalist expansion and imperialist imbrications\nin shaping global South security states\, with a focus on labor exploitation and natural resource extraction as well as other forms of value drain. She is currently working on a monograph for Brill: Race\, Class\, Empire and the (Re)making of the Tunisian Security State. Corinna has also researched and published academic works on anti-/decolonial theory and praxis\, the colonial-capitalist university\, land and labor struggles\, and popular education with a focus on the Maghreb\, West Asia and the United States.
