Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this spring! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op offers Spanish for Social Justice courses in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. There is an emphasis on validating U.S. Spanish and other varieties of Spanish that are often considered “non-standard.” We actively include the use of “vos” as used in Central America.  \n  \nAs part of Algarabía’s mission to make our courses accessible\, we offer sliding-scale rates and flexible payment plans. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. We will read about and discuss a few of the most important social movements in Brazil and their political context. \nThis course has a fast approach for people who already speak basic Portuguese \nDuring the course we will use visual materials\, music\, literature\, and conversation\, focusing on Brazilian Portuguese\, and we will also examine a few more differences between Brazilian\, African\, South Asian and European/Continental Portuguese. With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. \nBrazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same.  \nRevolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public virtual livestream of Prof. David Harvey’s course The Story of Capital. The course entails a close reading of the recent book The Story of Capital: What Everyone Should Know about How Capital Works by David Harvey. \nFor decades\, David Harvey has been teaching Marx’s work\, particularly Capital\, to great acclaim. He has analysed chapter by chapter – sometimes line-by-line – Marx’s three volumes and the Grundrisse. This new book opens up the mental universe of that work for a general reader. \nIn The Story of Capital\, Harvey takes a synoptic approach to the conceptual architecture as a whole and guides us through the key moments\, from labour and technology to the state and geopolitics\, via the profit rate\, social reproduction\, the relationship to nature\, fictitious capital and the return of the rentiers. In doing so\, Harvey has produced a work which will become a key reference for all those trying to grasp the nature of contemporary capitalism. \nThe course will run on Tuesdays from 4:15-6:15pm from September 8-December 1\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:An interactive live journalism show about the devastating and traumatic impacts of Israel’s use of drones in the besieged Gaza Strip. \nBy tying together personal narratives and documentation about the on-the-ground reality of this genocide\, Living with Drones weaves a compelling narrative that asks audiences to engage with violations of humanitarian and international law in Gaza since October 2023. \nEmploying the war diary narrative\, the show takes audiences into the day-to-day experiences of life in Gaza while drawing parallels between previous wars and the continued assault on Gaza today. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs. \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nCourse Offerings\nAll courses run for 10 weeks. Total tuition for each complete 10-week course is $300–$400 on a sliding scale\, or $500 when paid through a work or professional-development stipend. \nBeginner I (in-person and virtual options)\nThis course introduces students with no prior experience to the Arabic alphabet and the basics of reading\, writing\, pronunciation\, and sentence structure.
