SUMMARY:VIRTUAL COURSE: The Story of Capital w/ David Harvey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public virtual livestream of Prof. David Harvey’s course The Story of Capital. The course entails a close reading of the recent book The Story of Capital: What Everyone Should Know about How Capital Works by David Harvey. \nFor decades\, David Harvey has been teaching Marx’s work\, particularly Capital\, to great acclaim. He has analysed chapter by chapter – sometimes line-by-line – Marx’s three volumes and the Grundrisse. This new book opens up the mental universe of that work for a general reader. \nIn The Story of Capital\, Harvey takes a synoptic approach to the conceptual architecture as a whole and guides us through the key moments\, from labour and technology to the state and geopolitics\, via the profit rate\, social reproduction\, the relationship to nature\, fictitious capital and the return of the rentiers. In doing so\, Harvey has produced a work which will become a key reference for all those trying to grasp the nature of contemporary capitalism. \nThe course will run on Tuesdays from 4:15-6:15pm from September 8-December 1\, 2026. Register for the virtual course at the form below. \nFull Course Schedule Here

The program will deepen grammar structures in practical ways\, and include writing and speaking exercises about historical and contemporary contexts of the working classes and social movements in Brazil\, and other Portuguese-speaking countries. \nMore information:\nPortuguese is a language with roots in Portugal and also the official language spoken today in 10 countries or regions: Brazil\, Mozambique\, Angola\, Portugal\, Guine-Bissau\, East Timor\, Equatorial Guinea\, Macau\, Cape Verde\, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. In nearby regions\, it is more widely spoken in areas of Newark\, New Jersey; Astoria\, Queens; in the coastal regions of Connecticut\, and Massachusetts. \nBackground:\nSince the 16th century Brazilians started to incorporate dialects\, words and sounds into Portuguese\, particularly from the Tupi and Guarani indigenous linguistic branches that make up the majority of the pre-Columbian indigenous languages of Brazil’s current territory. With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. Brazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same. Revolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

SUMMARY:First Fridays ft. Mariachi Reyes & Linda Paúla Marcos
DESCRIPTION:Join us Fri. Nov. 6th at 7pm for an evening with family mariachi band Mariachi Reyes and singer-songwriter Linda Paúla Marcos\, including a preview of her upcoming album Humané. \nFirst Fridays at The People’s Forum is a monthly concert series curated and co-presented by Artists Against Apartheid\, featuring artists on the cutting edge of culture whose work speaks to the political and social moment. Each show is a live\, intimate\, and immersive experience—a space where music & art are understood as tools in the struggle for collective liberation.\nThis month\, we’re bringing two acts to the TPF stage for a one-night-only celebration of Latin American music. \nMariachi Reyes is a family who have played mariachi together their whole lives. They carry the tradition forward as a family through performance and their presence on social media. \nLinda Paúla Marcos’ voice and words have a deep and viscerally tender resonance that arrests the listener into reflection\, while evolving the tapestry of contemporary Latin American music rooted right here in Lenapehoking (New York City). Marcos’ music seamlessly harkens to towering legacies of legendary nueva canción and folk icons like Mercedes Sosa\, Chabuca Granda\, Soledad Bravo\, and Atahualpa Yupanqui\, preserving a vital\, deeply emotional lineage of acoustic storytelling. Melding her Afro-Andean roots with a modern\, New York-born perspective gives her music a rare and timeless weight that speaks directly to the current human experience. Marcos will be sharing original work from her upcoming album Humané and traditional work alongside guitarist\, Alba Rios. \nAlba Rios is a multi-genre guitarist based in Brooklyn. Born in Lima and a proud immigrant\, she projects her obsession with Peruvian music and the lament it lavishes with her traditional criollo style. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:FORECLOSURES: A COMMUNITY EXCHANGE
DESCRIPTION:A collective conversation and gathering to imagine urgent actions for artists\, activists and thinkers in the wake of technofascism. \n\n\n\n\nIf apocalyptic times and spectacles expose the genocidal and geocidal structures of this world\, how are cultural workers and activists disentangling their aesthetics from such webs? While capitalism\, imperialism and cisheteropatriarchy deploy technofascism to coopt and annihilate all resistance to its dictates\, decolonial artists continue to imagine new ways to rupture\, dismantle and denounce systems of total death\, in the long lineage of militant and guerilla movements from Algeria to South Africa\, Puerto Rico\, Palestine and beyond. What does decolonization mean today and how does it trouble the realm and study of aesthetics? What is an anarchic poethics of this time? How can we sustain autonomous practice and resistance as global webs of interconnected struggle? \nWe will reflect on these urgent concerns and imagine other ways of making\, organizing and gathering that shatter oppressive systems. \nPresented with Undoxx and Cultural Solidarity Project \n\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:Book Launch | ANATOMY OF DISENTEGRATION feat. author Rodrigo Nunes in conversation with Brendan O’Connor
DESCRIPTION:Join Rodrigo Nunes\, a leading political philosopher\, as he dissects the impact of Brazil’s recent presidential elections\, analyzes the global far right’s appeal through the lens of Bolsonarismo\, and launches his new book Anatomy of Disintegration.\n\nFor four years\, Jair Bolsonaro led Brazil and the popular\, far-right movement that bore his name. His rise\, defeat\, and the chaos he left in his wake reflect patterns that are playing out in several countries\, from the US to Argentina to India. In Anatomy of Disintegration\, Rodrigo Nunes uses Brazil as a point of departure to make sense of why the far right is on the rise all over the world\, where its appeal comes from\, and explain the dystopian horizon it is moving toward.Through sharp\, original analyses of the social composition of its supporters\, the material and affective conditions that underpin it\, and the mainstream’s inability to respond to it\, Rodrigo Nunes argues that the contemporary far right is better understood not as an effort to block but as an attempt to harness and accelerate forces of social disintegration set in motion by capital and intensified by the crisis of neoliberalism. \n\nRodrigo Nunes is an associate professor in philosophy at PUC-Rio\, Brazil\, and a visiting fellow at the University of Essex\, UK. He is the author of Neither Vertical nor Horizontal: A Theory of Political Organisation and Organisation of the Organisationless: Collective Action After Networks. His articles have appeared in Boston Review\, Les Temps Modernes\, Radical Philosophy\, Jacobin\, and The Guardian. He lives between London and Rio de Janeiro.\n\nBrendan O’Connor is a journalist and author of Blood Red Lines: How Nativism Fuels the Right. He has written for The Baffler\, The New Yorker\, and The New York Times and is a PhD candidate in Geography at the CUNY Graduate Center.

SUMMARY:REVERENT PORTRAITS w/ S. YEMISI ADEYEMO
DESCRIPTION:REVERENT PORTRAITS: DRAWING\, PAINTING\, AND ASSEMBLAGE w/ S. YEMISI ADEYEMO \nOne-day  |  Thursday\, November 19  |  5:30-8:30PM  |  Sliding scale\, $30-50 \nIn this three-hour workshop\, participants will learn the fundamentals of portrait drawing and create a small\, embellished frame honoring someone they wish to remember\, celebrate\, or hold close. Through guided technical instruction in facial proportions\, observation\, and shading\, participants will draw a portrait from a photograph of their choosing\, with opportunities to incorporate painting based on their experience and comfort level. \nWe will draw inspiration from devotional practices across cultures\, including memory jugs\, Afro-diasporic altar traditions\, and the assemblages of Betye Saar. While informed by these traditions\, embellishments will be intuitive and personal to each maker. We will also explore how acts of remembrance and reverence may preserve overlooked histories and connect personal experiences of grief to broader social and political consciousness. No prior art experience is required. Participants should bring a photograph of their chosen subject and are welcome to bring small\, meaningful objects to incorporate into their frames. \n__ \nS. Yemisi Adeyemo (she/they) is a politically engaged interdisciplinary artist working across assemblage\, painting\, and sculpture. Using found materials recovered from urban public space\, she creates layered devotional objects that move between altarpiece and artifact. Her work examines material conditions across global and domestic contexts\, tracing the implications of (neo)imperialism through instances of tragedy\, survival\, and rebellion. Positioning grief as a site of personal and ideological revelation\, her work hopes to shift individualized mourning toward collective critical resistance.\nYemisi received a BFA in Painting from RISD and an MFA in Visual Art from Mason Gross School of the Arts\, Rutgers University. She was a 2025-2026 NXTHVN Studio Art Fellow and a 2021 BRIClab Contemporary Arts Resident. She has taught visual art in an array contexts and communities\, including Rutgers University\, and The Bronx Museum of The Arts. Her work has been featured in Hyperallergic\, New American Paintings\, Liverpool University Press’ Sculpture Journal\, Art Cube\, and Forbes\, where she was recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Art & Style list in 2025.

SUMMARY:Rebirth of Haitian Vodou Music
DESCRIPTION:This book launch-concert will introduce the essay-biography of Yves Chico Boyer\, founder of the rasin ‘root’ music band Foula and a key figure in the revival of Haitian vodou music. Musicologist and art historian Prince Guetjens\, who has gathered testimonies from Chico’s collaborators in Haiti\, in France and in New York\, explores why Foula’s artistic achievements did not gain international recognition compared to Haitian Konpa music. The narrative examines factors such as US imperialist politics\, inadequate support for the arts\, socio-economic divisions\, and the pursuit of stardom over genuine artistry\, highlighting Chico Boyer’s exceptional contributions to this music history. The event will also feature a concert of rasin music and vodou jazz performed by artists influenced by Chico\, including Prince Guetjens. \n  \nThe book (in French and in English) will be available for sale. \n  \nKonsè lansman liv sa a pral prezante esè-biyografi Yves Chico Boyer\, fondatè gwoup mizik rasin Foula a ak yon pèsonalite kle nan relansman mizik vodou ayisyen an. Mizikològ ak istoryen atizay Prince Guetjens\, ki ranmase temwayaj kolaboratè Chico yo nan peyi Dayiti\, France ak Nouyòk\, eksplore poukisa reyalizasyon atistik Foula yo pa t jwenn rekonesans entènasyonal konpare ak mizik Konpa ayisyen an. Narasyon an egzamine faktè tankou politik enperyalis Etazini\, mank sipò pou atizay\, divizyon sosyo-ekonomik\, ak kous dèyè selèb olye de bonjan atizay\, sa ki mete aksan sou kontribisyon eksepsyonèl Chico Boyer nan istwa mizik sa a. Evènman an ap genyen tou yon konsè mizik rasin ak djaz vodou ak atis ki te enfliyanse pa Chico\, pami yo gen Prince Guetjens. \nLiv la (an franse ak an anglè) ap disponib pou vann. \n
