DESCRIPTION:¡Bienvenides! Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this spring! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op offers Spanish for Social Justice courses in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in New York City (Lenapehoking)\, one of the largest and most diverse Spanish-speaking cities in the world\, as well as the rest of Turtle Island and Abya Yala.  \n  \nTo apply\, click HERE \n  \nSUMMER 2026 COURSE SCHEDULE: \n  \nClick HERE to view the full list of classes\, schedules and descriptions. \n*Times are in Eastern Time (ET) / New York\, New York \nWEEKDAY SESSIONS: Virtual Courses (10 Weeks)  \nStart: Monday July 6th & Tuesday July 7th  \nEnd: Monday September 7th & Tuesday September 8th \nWEEKEND SESSIONS: Virtual Courses (10 Weeks)  \nStart: Saturday July 11th & Sunday July 12th \nEnd: Saturday September 12th & Sunday September 13th \n  \nIMPORTANT: \n▪ This virtual program is Open-to-All. However\, we prioritize access to folks identified as BIPOC. \n▪ Please only apply if you can attend most of the classes.  \n▪ Each session can hold up to 15 participants. \n▪ Cost of class $200-$400 sliding scale. This includes all course materials. \n*$500 if an employer or another institutional funding source pays for the contribution.* \n  \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION \nAll courses focus on the use of inclusive\, gender-neutral\, and anti-racist language. There is an emphasis on validating U.S. Spanish and other varieties of Spanish that are often considered “non-standard.” We actively include the use of “vos” as used in Central America.  \n  \nAs part of Algarabía’s mission to make our courses accessible\, we offer sliding-scale rates and flexible payment plans. You’ll be able to select your payment tier and plan directly within the application form\, based on your financial circumstances. \nABOUT OUR LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: At Algarabía Language Co-op\, we see language learning as a meaningful\, collaborative\, and transformative process reflected in our training in hands-on communicative and task-based language teaching approaches and our use of popular education in the language classroom. We seek to support the holistic development of all language learners as they become competent multilingual speakers. DESCRIPTION:PRINT-MAKING OPEN STUDIO w/ DANIEL + PETER + HAMZAH \nOne-day   |   11AM – 2PM   |   Saturday\, August 1 \nOpen studio is a space to develop a print-making project in community with other organizers\, artists\, and cultural workers. \nThese sessions are designed for those who have taken Screenprint 101 or Revolutionary Printmaking at The People’s Forum\, or who have experience with relief or screenprinting. \nEach session is drop-in and goals are defined by the participant. Basic tools and materials are available—including paper\, transparencies\, ink\, linoleum\, screens\, and emulsion. \nIf you would like the studio to print a transparency for you screenprint project\, please email the file to francesca.b@peoplesforum.org by noon on Thursday before the session with subject line ‘OPEN STUDIO PRINT’ and the dimensions (inch by inch) noted in the body of the email. \nRegistration is required. Come to experiment\, come to get your hands dirty! \n__ \nDaniel Drennan ElAwar is an illustrator\, printmaker\, fiber artist\, and educator. His work\, based in a documentary genre\, focuses primarily on issues of displacement\, dispossession\, and disinheritance. His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently manages the studio and workshops for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ. \nOne of Many artists\, Peter and Hamzah\, create fashion\, art\, and music as a way to drive positive change in the world.
