DESCRIPTION:Advanced Reading in Portuguese – Summer Intensive\nNew course! \nFor students who completed the Intermediate 2 course\, or have previous knowledge of composed verb forms (composed subjunctive\, passive voice\, and more); and are ready for more advanced reading and discussions. \nNew Students: An application and the full Assessment form is required for this level (the assessment link is at the end of the Application form). This will be discussed in class.\n\nAdvanced Reading in Portuguese focuses on deepening listening\, speaking\, writing\, and developing better communication in Portuguese\, working with readings\, films and recordings focusing on Brazilian and other Portuguese-based revolutionary thinkers and writers in politics\, sociology\, philosophy\, pedagogy and literature. For learners who already speak Intermediate Portuguese and completed Intermediate Portuguese 2\, or qualified via an Assessment form. \nThis course will help you enlarge your vocabulary\, put composed verbal structures to use\, practice writing and deep listening skills in practical ways\, and more elaborate conversations with Portuguese native speakers. We will work with readings\, films and recordings focusing on Brazilian and other Portuguese-based revolutionary thinkers and writers\, such as Paulo Freire\, Djamila Ribeiro\, Amilcar Cabral\, Florestan Fernandes\, and others. This course has an advanced approach for people who already speak Intermediate Portuguese \nWe will look at some differences between Brazilian\, African\, South Asian and European/Continental Portuguese\, and engage with the history of Brazilian people\, its revolutionary struggles\, and other means of resistance. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. It is estimated that 270 million people speak Portuguese today\, amongst which nearly 254 million are native speakers. It is the second most spoken Romance language\, after Spanish. Brazil’s 211 million people is the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world. \nAs a colonial language\, it suffered many transformations\, particular to each locale. It is nowadays also a result of cultural resistance of the indigenous and enslaved people during colonialism. It is spoken in the U.S particularly in the Northeast\, in California and in Florida\, where native Portuguese speakers\, who are immigrants from Africa\, South Asia\, Europe and Brazil have concentrated historically. In nearby regions\, it is more widely spoken in areas of Newark\, New Jersey; Astoria\, Queens; in the coastal regions of Connecticut\, and Massachusetts. \n

DESCRIPTION:Basic Portuguese 2 / Português Básico 2 SUMMER INTENSIVE \nFor students who know the basic structure of Portuguese \nPortuguês Básico 2 is the second module of the beginner’s class\, designed by Natalia de Campos for The People’s Forum\, with a focus on listening\, speaking and developing communication skills in Portuguese. This course will give you a solid base and allow you to start communicating with Portuguese native speakers. \nThe program will introduce grammar structures in practical ways\, and some writing exercises. The intensive course runs twice weekly on Zoom\, and an extra hour of required individual practice exercises. Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this spring! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op offers Spanish for Social Justice courses in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. There is an emphasis on validating U.S. Spanish and other varieties of Spanish that are often considered “non-standard.” We actively include the use of “vos” as used in Central America.  \n  \nAs part of Algarabía’s mission to make our courses accessible\, we offer sliding-scale rates and flexible payment plans. You’ll be able to select your payment tier and plan directly within the application form\, based on your financial circumstances. \nABOUT OUR LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: At Algarabía Language Co-op\, we see language learning as a meaningful\, collaborative\, and transformative process reflected in our training in hands-on communicative and task-based language teaching approaches and our use of popular education in the language classroom.
