DESCRIPTION:Arabic for Social Justice\nAPPLY HERE: Registration Form \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is offering new Arabic courses at The People’s Forum to those who are interested in learning Arabic with a focus on topics of social justice\, cinema\, media\, and culture. \nThrough weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs. \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nCourse Offerings\nAll classes run for 10 weeks. Cost for each class is a $300–$400 sliding scale ($500 if the contribution is paid for by a work stipend instead of the individual participant). \n  \nA1: Beginner I (In-person and virtual options)\nThis course introduces students with no prior experience to the Arabic alphabet and the basics of reading\, writing\, pronunciation\, and sentence structure. Participants learn foundational vocabulary and simple grammatical forms while being introduced to spoken Arabic alongside Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). \n\nVirtual: Sundays\, starting Jun 14 | 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM EST\nVirtual: Sundays\, starting Jun 14 | 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM EST\nIn-Person: Saturdays\, starting Jun 13 | 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM EST\n\n  \nA2: Beginner II (In-person and virtual options)\nDesigned for students with one semester of Arabic\, this course reviews core structures and expands vocabulary\, verb conjugation\, and sentence formation. Students work with short video clips\, songs\, dialogues\, and written texts to expand vocabulary\, practice key grammatical structures\, and build confidence in comprehension\, conversation\, and short writing. \n\nVirtual: Sundays\, starting Jun 14 | 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM EST\nIn-Person: Saturdays\, starting Jun 13 | 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM EST\n\n  \nAdvanced and Heritage Speakers Film Club (Virtual only)\nThis discussion- and media-based Arabic course uses a film club format to develop advanced comprehension\, vocabulary\, and expressive skills across colloquial Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Designed for high-intermediate learners\, advanced students\, and heritage speakers\, participants work with subtitled and unsubtitled films/clips\, dialogue transcripts\, and short texts through translation\, brief writing\, and guided discussion. \n\nVirtual: Sundays\, starting Jun 14 | 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM EST\n\n  \nImportant Information for Applicants\n\nRolling Admissions: Selected participants will be contacted by our instructors on a rolling basis until a week before classes start. DESCRIPTION:FOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF Film & The People’s Forum Present : Dreaming Beyond Rikers\n\nTribeca Festival 2025 Official Selection for U.S. Documentary Competition\, FOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF debuts the poetry of Venida Brodnax Browder\, mother of Kalief Browder\, and weaves a lyrical and cinematic mosaic connecting past\, present\, and future while exploring the movement to transform Rikers Island- the world’s most notorious jail- into a renewable energy center. Full film synopsis below. \nPlease join us for a poetic and empowering afternoon at The People’s Forum! Following the film screening\, there will be a panel and organizing workshop featuring local advocates from the Campaign to Close Rikers\, Freedom Agenda\, the Jails Action Coalition\, HALT Solitary and more to help facilitate a deeper conversation about the current status of the complete plan to close Rikers Island Jail and organizing to push for its closure by the legally-mandated deadline of August 31\, 2027. We will also visualize and plan for the next phase of the closing plan that is also approved and legally-mandated – the creation of Renewable Rikers in its place. \nThe panel and workshop will be followed by poetry performances by featured artists TBD\, as well as an open mic. \nThe event is free and open to the public with an RSVP and a suggested donation. Space is limited; advance registration is required below. \n\nEVENTBRITE LINK  \nFILM SYNOPSIS\nFOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF (95 minutes) delves into the profound legacy of Kalief Browder\, who at age 16 was sent to New York’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex for allegedly stealing a backpack. After three years of solitary confinement\, he was released without charge\, but later committed suicide at the age of 22. At the heart of this narrative is his mother\, Venida Brodnax Browder\, who found solace in writing poetry before dying from broken heart syndrome. FOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF is a cinematic mosaic\, an immersive journey connecting past\, present\, and future that is balanced between contemporary verite and vivid poetic interludes and rare archival imagery that take us back to the untold story of the Citywide Jail Rebellion of 1970 led by the Black Panthers and Young Lords. Taking an unconventional and liminal approach\, the film explores how the carceral system is a vicious cycle\, and that an individual’s life – and afterlife – can expand exponentially to create societal change previously considered unattainable.

DESCRIPTION:COLLAGE MAKING FOR LIBERATION w/ ASHLEY LAGRANGE \nOne-day   |   6-8:30PM   |   Saturday\, June 6   |   Sliding Scale  \nJoin us for Collage Making For Liberation\, a one-day workshop w/ Queens-based therapist and artist Ashley Lagrange! \nIn these sessions you’ll learn how to create collage art as a medium for political agitation and propaganda and as a tool for self-reflection and expression. Participants will gather inspiration from collage artists who have created intentional Agitprop and then be provided with prompts and materials to create their own. \n__ \nAshley Marie Lagrange\, (They/Them) is a therapist\, coach\, and collage artist born\, raised and currently residing in Queens\, New York to a multigenerational household Dominican l household. Ashley works in the day as a politicized therapist and coach for the QTBIPOC population which stemmed from their lived experience with madness and grassroots peer support organizing. Ashley is also a Collage Artist\, having taught and facilitated various classes and workshop spaces on the analog art form. Ashley is a member of DegrowNYC and previously sat as their Propaganda Chair.
