We will read about and discuss a few of the most important social movements in Brazil. This course has a fast approach for people who already speak basic Portuguese. \nDuring the course we will use visual materials\, music\, literature\, and conversation\, focusing on Brazilian Portuguese\, and we will also examine a few more differences between Brazilian\, African\, South Asian and European/Continental Portuguese. The program will deepen grammar structures in practical ways\, and include writing and speaking exercises. We will engage with the history of Brazilian people\, its revolutionary struggles\, and other means of resistance. \nYou will learn about historical and contemporary contexts of the working classes and social movements in Brazil\, and other Portuguese-speaking countries. \n  \nBackground information: \nPortuguese is a language with roots in Portugal and also the official language spoken today in 10 countries: Brazil\, Mozambique\, Angola\, Portugal\, Guinea-Bissau\, East Timor\, Equatorial Guinea\, Macau\, Cape Verde\, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. It is estimated that 270 million people speak Portuguese today\, amongst which nearly 254 million are native\nspeakers. It is the second most spoken Romance language\, after Spanish. Brazil’s 211 million people is the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world. \nAs a colonial language\, it suffered many transformations\, particular to each locale. It is nowadays also a result of cultural resistance of the indigenous and enslaved people during colonialism. It is spoken in the U.S particularly in the Northeast\, in California and in Florida\, where native Portuguese speakers\, who are immigrants from Africa\, South Asia\, Europe and Brazil have concentrated historically. DESCRIPTION:For students who know the basic structure of Portuguese \nPortuguês Básico 2 is the second module of the beginner’s class\, designed by Natalia de Campos for The People’s Forum\, with a focus on listening\, speaking and developing communication skills in Portuguese. \nThis course will give you a solid base and allow you to start communicating with Portuguese native speakers. The program will introduce grammar structures in practical ways\, and some writing exercises. The course runs weekly on Zoom\, and you should plan an extra hour of recommended individual practice exercises. \nAs you develop your language skills\, we will also engage with the history of Brazilian people\, its revolutionary struggles\, and other means of resistance. SUMMARY:[SERIES] Hidden Histories of Rebellion in the United States
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nThe stories we tell\, and those we don’t\, have serious consequences for our reality and our future. \nThrough all means of communication\, the Trump administration and its billionaire backers are manufacturing a false narrative about the history\, people\, and current reality of the United States to justify their racist\, xenophobic\, patriarchal\, and colonial agenda for people in the US and across the world.  \nAs we approach the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States\, the Trump administration and its billionaire backers are using this moment to launch an all-out attack on history and truth\, intending to replace it with a false narrative that justifies their racist\, xenophobic\, patriarchal\, and colonial agenda for people in the US and across the world.   \nThey glorify the parts of history that serve their racist program today\, while censoring the histories of heroic resistance\, solidarity\, and multiracial unity that shaped the people and history of the United States. They persecute those who tell the truth about the horrors of slavery and the fight that abolished it. They erase the history of Jim Crow and dismiss the millions who rose up to dismantle legal apartheid in this country. The examples are in the thousands. \nThis is a blatant attempt to weaponize a distorted version of US history to make their extreme right-wing project appear natural\, popular\, and uncontested. But their story is based on lies. Not only is their agenda completely and massively unpopular\, their version of history is so manipulated that it is more fiction than fact.  \nIt is up to us to expose these lies. We must become the arbiters of truth\, and tell the stories of our people\, our heroes\, the millions who have fought oppression and exploitation and demanded a better world.  \nThis seminar series is part of reclaiming that history. We will uncover just a fraction of the hidden and mostly unknown people’s rebellions that have shaped the history of the United States. These are the people on whose shoulders we stand\, and these are the stories we need to know.  \nThe battle over history is not a symbolic one.  When we know the people who rose up before us—who organized across race\, gender\, and religion\, who fought back and forced change— we gain the confidence and the certainty that we too can rise up and fight for a better world. \nREGISTER HERE \nWHEN \nThis series will run from January 27 to March 17\, meeting once a week with a few exceptions. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills\, and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs.  \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world.  \nSelected participants will be contacted by our instructors on a rolling basis and until a week before classes start.
