Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills\, and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, and short stories. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world.  \nSelected participants will be contacted by our instructors on a rolling basis and until a week before classes start. Late applications will be considered if spots are made available. This course is open for Heritage speakers only; those who grew up speaking Arabic but were denied access to formally learning it (Arab-Americans and/or Arab immigrants)\nClass meets virtually on Zoom\nSuggested Donation $150-$200 sliding scale. This includes all course materials. \n\n  \nNOTE: This program prioritizes working class\, queer\, BIPOC\, and heritage speakers of Arabic. As part of Algarabía’s mission to make our courses accessible\, we have sliding-scale rate options and payment plans available. SUMMARY:INTRODUCTION TO KRÉYOL
DESCRIPTION:Haitian Creole is the native language in Haiti and is also widely spoken in New York. Introduction to Kréyol is a beginner class with a focus on developing listening skills and speaking skills to allow you communicate with native Creole speakers. The program will also introduce some basic grammar rules and vocabulary. The instructor will use documents and videos during the learning process. You will also engage with the history and struggle of the Haitian people. \nThe Creole language was forged in the former French plantation colonies in the 17th to the 19th centuries among the populations of the Caribbean Islands and the Indian Ocean Islands. The Creole language was the first step for enslaved workers in the French plantation colonies who spoke many different languages to find a common method of communication in order to organize and emancipate themselves from the oppression of slavery. Although the Creole language is a mixture of European\, African\, and Native American languages\, it refers to its own grammatical structure\, vocabulary and expressions. \nNowadays\, Creole is most widely spoken by a large part of the populations in the Caribbean countries (former French plantation colonies and current French territories)\, in Louisiana (USA)\, in the Indian Ocean Islands (current French territories). In New York (USA)\, Creole is used in many official administrations. Haiti’s population is the largest Creole-speaking population in the world. \nJoin us for an introductory course on the basics of the Creole language as well as its rich historical and contemporary context! \nDETAILS \n\nCourse runs on Wednesdays and Fridays every week (for 10 weeks) from April 14 – June 18 \nEach W/F class is 6:30 – 8pm EST\n$150 – $250 sliding scale cost for students*\n\n*Course contributions are sliding scale. SUMMARY:SERIES: Histories of the Working Class in North America 2021
DESCRIPTION:Histories of the Working Class in North America is a space for popular education that  brings researchers and scholars into conversation with organizers\, students\, and teachers rooted in the contemporary working class. Hosted by The People’s Forum\, this series is driven by a commitment to better understand the history of working class life and struggle in order to learn lessons that can be applied in the class struggle today.  \nThe majority of us\, no matter our level of education\, have been taught to see history from the perspective of our exploiters\, obscuring the histories of working class struggle in order to forestall future victories. This has been accomplished\, in part\, by an enforced divide between intellectuals working in academia\, and intellectuals committed to spaces of political struggle. We invite emerging and established scholars of working histories in a range of economic sectors\, geographic\, and social locations\, to speak to our audience\, particularly young people engaged in working class and anti-racist struggles. We intend to build a collective conversation and a practice of sustained study to strengthen anti-racist\, feminist\, and working class struggles today.
