SUMMARY:Race and Revolution in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Duration: This class meets for six weeks\, Tuesdays 6-8pm\, from October 9 to November 13. \nContent: In the early 20th Century Black radicals in NY began to theorize the fallout of race ideology as a unique social injury distinct from\, but interconnected with\, class exploitation. They linked racial oppression to capitalism and imperialism\, and black liberation to the socialist project. They also argued that the struggle for socialism in the US  required a strong anti-racist platform and organizing agenda within the socialist movement—a position that differed from the one held by white American socialists at the time. Their analysis of race and class and the organizational conclusions they drew have been foundational for revolutionaries the world over. This course explores the position that historically oppressed groups in the US — Puerto Ricans and Native\, African\, Chinese\, Japanese and Mexican Americans have occupied in the US economy. We outline the Materialist/Marxist analysis of race ideology and how if differs from other interpretations. We also analyze the theoretical and political contributions that radicals of color in the US have made to the fight for human liberation. Topics include ideology\, race ideology in the US\, gender and sexuality\, Karl Marx on the Civil War\, the New Imperialism of the late 19th Century\, the African Blood Brotherhood\, interventions by Black Americans at the Comintern in Moscow\, Revolutionary Nationalism\, Communists in Harlem\, the Young Lords\, the Black Panthers\, the Brown Berets\, I Wor Kuen\, and the American Indian Movement\, among others. \nImage © ‘Se Siente El Miedo\,’ by Michelle Angela Ortiz

SUMMARY:Introduction to Marxism for Women Only
DESCRIPTION:Duration: This is a ten-week class on Tuesdays 6:30-8:30pm\, starting October 2 and ending December 4. \nContent: We’ll explore some key concepts about human beings\, society and history\, and our relationship to the rest of nature. Readings will be short and accessible excerpts from writings by Marx and Engels or later Marxists. I believe that this theory can help us analyze the social and economic realities and structures we live in–who holds power and how–and fight more effectively for liberation. \nIn a continuing attempt to increase access for those who have been historically excluded\, turned off or silenced by the way this theory is often taught and discussed\, we are offering this intro class for women only. Everyone who identifies as a woman is welcome.  \nSome of the central questions that we’ll address are: \nHow did the oppression of women\, and the division of societies into people who work and others who exploit them\, originate and develop historically? What are the driving dynamics of capitalism that make it make it so productive\, innovative\, brutal and ecologically destructive? What intellectual tools can help us understand industry’s complex impacts on our bodies\, our psyches and the nature around us—impacts that capitalists\, and people who think like them\, don’t want to see or cannot see? What did Marx understand—and not understand—about white supremacy and Eurocentrism\, and how has that analysis been deepened and modified by later Marxists?
