Jazz: Music of the Black Holocaust is an introductory course that seeks to explore intersections of “jazz” music, historical perspectives of the African diaspora and their role and impact on contemporary society. Students will be introduced to basic jazz rhythms, melodies, harmonies, jazz culture, fashion and development through multi-media that includes videos, films and recordings. Open to the public.

April 3 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • Explore the early developments of melody, structure, and form in this early period of development in black music.

April 17 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • Folk Music and Stories of Life from Africa. Examine the influence that African and early traditional storytelling had on the development of African-American work songs which paved the way for the “blues”.

May 1 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • Expand melody, structure, and form to areas of Negro Spirituals, Blackface minstrelsy, the Fisk Jubilee Singers

May 15 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • Continue to explore Blues-Jazz Crossroads and Verbal Stories

May 29 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • Journey to New Orleans and St. Louis – Tales from the Mississippi

June 12 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • The Harlem Renaissance – Music, Jazz and Poetry

June 26 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • We will then move to music and its reception during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements. This will include an analysis of Jazz as protest (Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus” and Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam”), and the Motown era.

July 10 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • The Black Arts Movement. The Music of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Bebop / Cool Jazz. Return to St. Louis, along with Chicago, Kansas City and other urban music centers throughout America.

July 24 – 7:30 – 9 pm – $15

  • The Black Arts Movement continues. Migration of jazz musicians to New York City
