“The struggle of the artist must be rooted in that of the majority of our people.” With our brushes and paints, “we shall need to visualize the beauty of the country we would like our people to live in.”

– Thami Mnyele, one of South Africa’s great artist-militants and co-founder of the exiled cultural workers’ group Medu Arts Ensemble (Source)

Propaganda art has a long history in social movements, with a strong tradition on the left from posters and art of the Black Panther Party to the reproductive justice movement in Argentina.

Join us for an art workshop and skillshare, led by shenby @leftaesthetic, for cultural workers, organizers, and artists to learn about agitation propaganda for class struggle and to build political posters to actively use in revolutionary organizing.

Participants will walk away from the skill share thinking about how they can use their personal art for organizing, how they can create art that speaks to the people’s struggles and the fight for justice, while also taking away how to use poster designs for local, regional, and national work.

The session will include an exploration of shenby’s work and methodology, a look at historical examples of agitation propaganda, and a creative workshop portion.

This event is in-person (limited RSVPs for in-person, please sign up ASAP!), with virtual participation. Some poster making materials will be provided in-person for participants, and all participants, virtual or in-person, are encouraged to use whatever they have available and enjoy using for art creation.

shenby g (they/she) is an organizer and cultural worker from Columbus, Ohio. Their focus is on creating art in dedication to our struggle for socialism and liberation.
