In this 2-hour course, students will learn how to embroider using traditional Palestinian embroidery cross-stitch methods with Wafa Ghnaim, Palestinian textile author, researcher, educator, and artist in residence at The Museum of the Palestinian People. Materials will be provided. Tickets are $20/student, and there is limited capacity.

The class will focus on the Eye of the Camel motif from the Bir Saba region, offering an art history lecture in the first portion of the class, followed by hands-on instruction and demonstration. Supplies are provided, including a printed pattern and a booklet with stitching guidance.

Learning objectives for this course are:

  • History of the Bir Saba region, its traditional styles, and the latest scholarship on Palestinian embroidery.
  • How to cross-stitch following traditional Palestinian techniques, including two different methods of stitching and the
    principles of successful Palestinian embroidery execution.
  • How to select colors, thread a needle, and begin stitching.
  • Overall stitching guidance and strategy for the Eye of the Camel motif.
