About “IT WAS A COUP”
It Was A Coup is a feature film that documents the coup in Bolivia, the role of Mexican diplomacy in its defense of asylum and the crimes against humanity during the de facto government of Añez in Bolivia. Unpublished information on the Mexican diplomatic mission that traveled to Bolivia during the conflict and interviews with specialists from the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) demonstrate the complicity of the OAS with the coup. The testimony of former President of the Senate, Adriana Salvatierra, and of the former President, Evo Morales, during his exile in Mexico, make this film a key part of understanding the breakdown of democratic order in Bolivia.
It Was A Coup proves the existence of armed and fascist groups in Bolivia and the occurrence of human rights violations with videos recorded by the victims of the Sacaba and Senkata massacres, the video files that were presented to the IACHR. The film also features stories from Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Alberto Fernández, José Mujica, Rafael Correa, Cristina Fernández and Bernie Sanders.
The documentary is the culmination of a year-long project by a team of journalists, activists and independent artists who filmed and monitored events denouncing the coup, such as the work of Mexican photographer Narciso Contreras, who took photographed the massacre by Senkata. The direction, script and editing of the film were carried out by the Bolivian filmmaker Maria Fernanda Rada. The camera work done by Uruguayan director Santiago Berón. Production for the film took place in Bolivia by the filmmaker Luis Bolivar and in Washington and Mexico by the Mexican journalist Alina Duarte. The filmmaking team is dedicated to the principles of internationalism and hope that this film leaves a testimony that challenges the world’s democracies about the advance of coup fascism.
