This will be the sixth edition of the “Jazz and Self Determination” series where the primaries converse about the synthesis of jazz and socio political activity. Topics include the formations of independent labels, organizations, publications and musician run festivals.

The artists featured for the upcoming discourse are:

Ted Daniel-Trumpeter, composer, educator and founder of Ujamaa Records. Founding member of the NY Musicians Organization.

Syd Smart-Drummer, percussionist, educator, organizer and founder of the John Coltrane Memorial Concert series.

Craig Harris-Trombonist, composer, educator, alumni of the Sun Ra Arkestra and founder of the Harlem Jazz Box series. Mr. Harris was a long time collaborator with Amiri Baraka.

September 24: Arts Education and Workshop Concepts

Our classes share the same format as the panel discussions, except they occur within the classroom directly and utilizes presenters.
This approach is a constructive and functional technique in reference to developing the learning experience within the social educational paradigm. Much appreciation goes to The People’s Forum for facilitating this series.

The topic for 9-24-19 is “Arts Education and Workshop Concepts”, a conversation focused on the use of different artistic mediums within the workshop concept and art as a tool for social education . Our presenters are:

Judith Insell:
Violist, composer, educator, current director of Curriculum and Artist Development for the Bronx Arts Ensemble. Former director of School of Performing Arts at Bronx House, former director of music at Harlem School of the Arts, former member of the educational outreach team at The Julliard School.

Mariposa Fernandez:
Poet, educator and organizer. Graduate of New York University with a BA in women’s studies and MA in education. Author of Born Bronxena: Poems on Love, Identity and Survival. Mariposa has taught poetry at Poets House, The Bronx Writers Center and The Caribbean Cultural Center. Founder of Poetry for Entrepreneurs.

Chris Chalfant:
Composer, Pianist and vocalist.Producer of the Festival of Women Improvisers and American Women Composers.
Co-leader of the Lifetime Visions Orchestra and The Dojo Band with Joseph Jarman. She was a recent participant in the Celebrating Women Composers series.
