Saturday, July 13th the birthday of Albert Ayler, will feature two musicians who played and recorded with him:
Bassist Steve Tintweiss & Cellist Joel Freedman. Joel will share some cello sounds as a tribute to Albert during the course of our talk. The discussion will also include the history of the music Albert was involved in. 4pm-7pm
Violinist Ramsey Ameen (the Cecil Taylor Unit) will join us as well, sharing his memories of the 60’s and 70’s free music revolution.

Journalist, bandleader and professor Aurora Flores will make a presentation on Monday July 15th. 6pm-9pm.
Twenty-first century Renaissance woman Aurora Flores is the recipient of numerous awards including two Emmys, and listed in Who’s Who in Hispanic America. Leading her own consulting firm, Aurora Communications, Inc., she was the first female music correspondent for Billboard magazine. While attending Columbia’s Journalism School, she broke into mainstream journalism penning thousands of published articles for mainstream outlets. Founder of Zon del Barrio, an intergenerational world music band featuring her original compositions, Aurora is also a BMI composer who writes songs for the hit children’s show Dora the Explorer.
Flores writes on Latino culture while producing, promoting, and publicizing major musical events. She edited and wrote the foreword for ¡Salsa Talks! A Musical Heritage Uncovered, written by Mary Kent and can be seen in the PBS documentary: Latin Music USA; over BET’s Pasos Latinos; BRAVO’s Palladium, When Mambo was King; and the Smithsonian’s Latin jazz, La Combinación Perfecta. She sings alongside the late Tito Puente performing a composition she wrote over Edward James Olmos’s Americanos: Latino Life in the U.S. Aurora Flores is a sought after speaker conducting lecture/demonstrations at colleges, corporations, and universities nationwide with a focus on Latino unity through music and culture. She can be heard hosting radio and television programs.

Poet, writer and professor Patricia Spears Jones will make a presentation on the Wednesday July 24th class. 6pm-9pm.
Patricia Spears Jones is poet, playwright, anthologist, educator and cultural activist is the winner of the 2017 Jackson Poetry Prize from Poets & Writers. She is author of A Lucent Fire: New and Selected Poems and 10 other poetry collections and in anthologies such as Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin; BAX: Best American Experimental Writing, 2016: 2017 Pushcart Prize XLI, Best of Small Presses; and Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry. Poems recently published in The New Yorker; Ms. Muse, and CUTTHROAT: A Journal of the Arts. She edited THINK: Poems for Aretha Franklin Inauguration Day Hat and Ordinary Women: An Anthology of New York City Women Poets. She has taught at Community of Writers at Squaw Valley, Truro Center for the Arts, Fine Arts Work Center, The Gathering, Poets House, Gemini Ink, Brooklyn Poets and at Adelphi University, Queens College, LaGuardia Community College, Hunter College and Barnard College.
