Marx’s Capital, volume one (1)

Seminar of the NYC Marxist Studies Collective at the People's Forum conducted by Russell Dale. This course will be a careful reading of the first third of Marx's great economic analysis and critique of capitalism, Capital, volume one. This will be the first of three consecutive courses (Spring, Summer, Fall 2019) in which we will carefully read and discuss the entire work.

Cubanas Film Screening

This film evokes the continuous role of women in the Revolution, both in the guerrilla struggle and in the construction of the new Cuban society, through the testimonies of heroines such as Vilma Espín, Celia Sánchez and Haydée Santamaría, the founding figures of the Revolution, and also of contemporary women from different sectors of Cuban society.

Marielle Franco – The Legacy of a Powerful Woman: Panel Discussion

On March 16, we are honored to celebrate the power of women and to tell the story of the Brazilian sociologist, activist and politician Marielle Franco - murdered in 2018 - and of other amazing women who fight for Human Rights. An all-day event will discuss Marielle’s political path and impact as a black woman who grew up in a favela and had to overcome oppression, discrimination and to defy all odds in order to become one of the most powerful female leaders of her generation.

Some have called the U.S. Civil War the “second American revolution” or the completion of the first American revolution. Others claim that the war of independence and Civil War were not revolutions, but had tremendous revolutionary potential. We will read W.E.B. DuBois’ Black Reconstruction (Oxford University Press, 2007) in whole, and for more recent research, the middle part of Steven Hahn’s A Nation Under Our Feet: Black Political Struggles in the Rural South (Harvard University Press, 2003).
