Anthony Prince is the General Counsel for the California Homeless Union/Statewide Organizing Council, an attorney in the state of California and the Co-Chair of the California Poor People’s Campaign. He was a founding and leading member of the National Union of the Homeless and its Chicago/Gary Indiana local chapter in the late 1980s and early 1990s. As a member of the University of the Poor’s Homeless Union History Project, Anthony takes a revolutionary approach, combining the battle of the courtroom with the practical struggle in the camps, the shelters and the streets. Anthony’s current work exemplifies the power of front line organizing the poor and homeless as a united and leading social force in a broad movement to abolish the economic and social conditions that in giving rise to increasing poverty, hunger, homelessness, and abandonment in a time of significant abundance.

TAKEOVER: Film screening and Q&A with the National Union of the Homeless

On May 1st, 1990, homeless people led a simultaneous takeover of empty government (HUD) houses in cities across the United States. Skylight Pictures followed the takeovers with 12 crews in the eight cities, documenting the secret planning, the illegal occupations, and the hopeful aftermath of this bold endeavor.

Revolutionary Lawyering

This course will examine the role of the legal system as an historically-evolved mechanism and codification of the capitalist system, as well as a “relief valve” that functions to contain the social justice movement, especially the struggles of the dispossessed. This course will also consider the part that can be played by legal practitioners in revolutionary societal transformation.
